What We Ate This Week: 31/01/21

This week, we indulged in a few old favourites like Kaketemptations who are now doing nationwide delivery, Smoke and Bone’s monthly special and Patchi’s kunefe sandwich. Plus a new halal Filipino takeaway and tiramisu from a phonebooth!

Lorenzo Kusina

Lorenzo Kusina is a new Filipino delivery kitchen based in Acton industrial park run by chef Lorenzo and his two brothers. You can find contemporary Filipino dishes on his menu like pinoy bbq, longganisa burgers, The standout dish for me was the 8 hour braised beef ribs – sticky, tender ribs served with rice, honey glaze, and slaw.

Available for collection.

Patisserie Patchi

Patisserie Patchi are perhaps one of the key suppliers of Middle Eastern sweets and pastries to many restaurants dotted around London and the UK. Expect sweet and sticky baklavas, mamouls, assameliah, and of course, kunefe. Not any ordinary kunefe by the way, you want to try out the “kunefe sandwich” – a warm, cheesy piece of sweet kunefe sandwiched inside a sesame crusted kaak bread with a generous squirt of sugar syrup. It’s rich, it’s cheesy, and it’s indulgent but certainly worth trying.

Available for delivery and takeaway.

Halal Status: All meats served here is halal.

Kake Temptations

Kake Temptations have been around since forever and have been serving up humongous cake slices, funfetti milk cakes (yes, FUNFETTI milk cakes), killer brownies, and cake jars to all the lucky residents of Leicester. They have recently started shipping their items nationwide which means you can get all freshly baked cookies and brownies to your doorstep in less than 24 hours!

Available for delivery.

Smoke and Bones

As I am signed up to the Smoke and Bone’s monthly subscription service, I receive a food diy kit from them at the end of every month! This month is a slow-cooked lamb belly with an apricot bbq glaze, mashed potatoes, and asparagus. The kit was fairly easy to put together and can be done in under 20 minutes. The result is a tender piece of lamb with a crispy skin and buttery mash. On a side note, the kitchen did almost catch on fire when making this D:

Walkimisu

I’m all up for finding quirky halal things to eat in London so you can imagine my delight when I came across Walkimisu, a telephone booth shop in Bloomsbury that sells tiramisu boxes. Now I cheated as I ordered this via Deliveroo but I still love the concept and once lockdown is over, I will definitely make a visit just to see it in person! I opted for the dark chocolate and banana tiramisu plus the original one too. The tiramisu were a little heavy on the cream to biscuit ratio and perhaps could have had more coffee but it’s a fun treat if you’re in the area. They also sell pistachio, lemon, nutella and coconut, and strawberry flavours too.

Delivery and collection available

Halal Status: No alcohol used in the tiramisu
