With approximately two days of summer this year, we’re straight back to the cold, rainy London like we know it. And what is the perfect remedy to combat the freeze? Hot pot! You’re dunking in thinly sliced meats, vegetables, noodles and the likes into a large steaming pot of spicy broth, letting it cook and then devouring it immediately. It hits all the right spots; warming, fun for a group and most importantly, tasty. However finding a halal hot pot, and a good one, is a little tedious with all the scrolling so we’ve done all the dunking hard work for you and found a few places that can offer you a great halal experience.

Hotto Potto, Aldgate

Located just five minutes from Aldgate station, Hotto Potto is constantly busy, dishing out pot after pot of steaming hot broth. They specialise in Sichuan hot pots and their signature soup is the Sichuan spicy broth which comes deep red with hot Sichuan chillies floating on the surface; we recommend ordering this alongside a mushroom/tomato broth if it’s your first time having a hot pot. 

Hotto Potto has noted all of their halal items (a significant amount!) on the menu making it easy to order and you’ll be spoilt for choice from the snowflake beef fillet to the beef rolls filled with enoki mushrooms. We suggest ordering an assortment of dippings so you can make your own sauce on the side – perfect for dipping the freshly cooked meat and vegetables into.

Happy Lamb Hot Pot, Bayswater 

Happy Lamb Hot Pot has been around for a few years and their Bayswater branch is able to offer halal beef and lamb now – woohoo! They specialise in Mongolian hot pots with their creamy spicy marrow chicken broth being the most popular. If you’ve been a victim of under or overcooking that tender piece of beef before, Happy Lamb provides cooking times for each item on the menu so that they are cooked to the perfect level before eating. They have all the classic dipping accompaniments on their menu with sliced meats, vegetables and homemade fish pastes. Don’t forget to order the popular lamb skewers too.

Niu Hot Pot, Aldgate East

Niu Hot Pot is a restaurant that mainly focuses on Chaoshan style hot pot i.e. it’s all about the beef here. The Chaoshan hot pot tends to fall on the lighter and less spicy side of hot pots as they like to put emphasis on the quality of the meat so keep this in mind when you’re making an order. The halal options are quite limited here sadly but you can also opt for some great seafood items. 

Halal Status: Partially halal menu with beef rump, sirloin and hand cut beef being halal. The beef tallow and beef bone broth bases are not halal. No pork but alcohol is present.

3 Ko Bros, Canary Wharf

3 Ko Bros specialise in authentic Korean food and their Canary Wharf branch are able to offer jeongol – a Korean hot pot! Jeongol slightly differs from a Sichuan hot pot; the raw ingredients are placed in a large pan and a hot savoury broth is then poured in, all of which continues to cook to perfection at the table. 3 Ko Bros’ jeongol comes with raw and marinated beef bulgogi in Korean soy sauce, an assortment of mushrooms, vegetables, glass noodles and rice. You’ll be able to let this simmer on the gas burner at your table before you tuck in.

Real Beijing Food House, Soho

If you’re looking for a more centrally located hot pot, Real Beijing Food House in Chinatown is offering an all-you-can-eat halal hotpot! They have a range of broths to choose from including clear, spicy, tomato and mushroom soup, plus an abundance of dipping accompaniments such as premium beef and lamb slices, seafood, vegetables and of course, dipping sauces. The hot pot menu will set you back £32.80 per person. They also have a selection of hot dishes on the menu like BBQ skewers, dry hot pots, and meat and seafood dishes.
