We know, we know, we haven’t covered much of South London on HGAT before and it is somewhere we’re ready to explore once lockdown is lifted! Motu Indian Kitchen is a nod to the British love of Indian food and is from the guys behind Trishna, Gymkhana, Hoppers etc. You can find classics like the chicken tikka masala, paneer butter masala, lamb seekh kebabs and biryanis. Opt for their feast boxes which can feed between one to two people.

Mei Mei, Borough Market

Mei Mei is a Singaporean food stand situated in Borough Market and are known for their lovely Hainanese chicken and rice dish. Think poached chicken with rice and trimmings – it sounds simple but it is utter comfort. You can also opt for their nasi lemak with fried chicken or even the bucket of Mei Mei fried chicken! Just don’t forget to add on the kaya bread and butter pudding – a slab of toast made using kaya (coconut jam) and served with a slab of butter on top. Phew.

Namak Mandi, Tooting

Namak Mandi is somewhat of an institute of Tooting. Every night, the place would be heaving with people waiting to devour Namak Mandi’s fantastic pashtun dishes like chapli kebab, huge naans, karahis and even sajji, a whole lamb or chicken roasted over coal. Not to worry if you didn’t get a chance to visit, they are open for takeaway and delivery so you too can enjoy their traditional, heart-warming dishes with the exception of the enormous whole lamb, of course.

AlHaji Suya, Peckham and Greenwich

AlHaji Suya is a breath of fresh air from all the halal American bbq joints in London. You can pick-up some freshly barbecued Nigerian suya. If you haven’t had suya before, the tozo suya is the one you want to go for – fatty and tender beef barbecued and sprinkled in a spicy yaji powder. Their lamb suya is also worth trying. 

If you fancy a piece of this but live too far out, you can opt for their nationwide delivery suya.

Juici Jerk, Tooting

Juici Jerk is a family-owned business that opened up in 2017 selling contemporary Caribbean food. Expect sweet chilli pepper prawns, traditional jerk chicken that has been marinated for 24 hours, fried fish and macaroni cheese. Now that’s a treat!

Yen Burger, London Bridge

Bored of the same ol’ burgers and want something with a little pizazz? Yen Burger is a Japanese Burger bar that sells exactly what it says: Japanese-inspired burgers! You can find wagyu burgers, coconut panko fried chicken burgers and even a tofu burger. They even have gluten free options!

Other Side Fried, Brixton

Looking for a great fried chicken burger, Other Side Fried are ready for you. Think huge fried chicken breasts which you can have either doused in buffalo, honey butter, garlic butter mayo or plain. Don’t forget to add on a portion of fries too.

Akwaaba Kitchen, Camberwell

Forget your cheeky Nandos, Akwaaba are doing Ghanian grilled chicken with jollof rice with all the trimmings like corn on the cob, plantain and even a beef kebab. The shito, a Ghanian hot sauce, is a game changer so be sure to add it on to your order.
